چکیده

A fundamental issue in psycholinguistics concerns how speakers retrieve intended words from long-term memory. According to a selection by competition account (e.g., Levelt et al., 1999), conceptually driven word retrieval involves the activation of a set of candidate words and a competitive selection of the intended word from this set. Selection by competition explains, for example, the Stroop interference effect (e.g., Roelofs, 2003). Speakers are slower to name the ink color of an incongruent color-word combination (e.g., the word green in red ink, say “red”) than of a series of Xs. Although competition is widely regarded in the cognitive neurosciences as a ubiquitous mechanism, its role in lexical selection has been disputed by proponents of a responseexclusion account. This account holds that words are selected upon exceeding an activation threshold, regardless of the levels of activation of other words, and that Stroop interference arises later in an articulatory buffer (e.g., Finkbeiner and Caramazza, 2006). Whereas the lexical competition and response-exclusion accounts both explain the Stroop interference effect, Mahon et al. (2012) recently argued that associative facilitation from color-related words in the Stroop task (e.g., naming the ink color red is faster with fire than with lawn as the word stimulus) supports the response-exclusion account and challenges the competition account. They stated: “An overlooked finding (Dalrymple-Alford, 1972) resolves the issue by changing the printed words to fire and lawn. According to the model of selection by competition, fire will compete more for saying the word “red” than will lawn, and thus should lead to slower naming latencies. . The finding, originally reported by Dalrymple-Alford (1972), shows that naming latencies are faster with fire as the distractor than with lawn as the distractor. Glaser and Glaser (1989) replicated

Attention and facilitation: converging information versus inadvertent reading in Stroop task performance.

Disagreement exists about whether color-word Stroop facilitation is caused by converging information (e.g., Cohen et al., 1990; Roelofs, 2003) or inadvertent reading (MacLeod & MacDonald, 2000). Four experiments tested between these hypotheses by examining Stroop effects on response time (RT) both within and between languages. Words cannot be read aloud to produce facilitation between languages...

Lexical selection is not by competition: Evidence from the blocked naming paradigm

A central issue in research on speech production is whether or not the retrieval of words from the mental lexicon is a competitive process. An important experimental paradigm to study the dynamics of lexical retrieval is the blocked naming paradigm, in which participants name pictures of objects that are grouped by semantic category (‘homogenous’ or ‘related’ blocks) or not grouped by semantic ...

The modulation of exogenous Spatial Cueing on Spatial Stroop interference: Evidence of a set for “cue-target event segregation”

Two experiments are reported that test whether the modulation of exogenous cuing effects by the presence of a distractor at the location opposite the target (altering the time course of cueing effects, Lupiáñez et al., 1999, 2001) is due to the fast reorienting of attention or to a set for preventing the integration of the cue and the target within a single event representation. A Spatial Stroo...

The effects of Family-Self Facilitation and Family-Friendly Work Climate in reducing the effect of Work-Family Conflict on Family Satisfaction, Quality of Marital Relationship and Quality of Parenting among Nurses

Introduction: Today, employees are constantly confronted with work-family conflict. These conflicts can affect family functioning including satisfaction, quality of marital relationship, and quality of parenting.  This descriptive-correlational survey aimed to investigate whether the family-self facilitating and Family-Friendly Work Environment can reduce the effect of work-family and family wo...

Stroop proactive control and task conflict are modulated by concurrent working memory load.

Performance on the Stroop task reflects two types of conflict-informational (between the incongruent word and font color) and task (between the contextually relevant color-naming task and the irrelevant, but automatic, word-reading task). According to the dual mechanisms of control theory (DMC; Braver, 2012), variability in Stroop performance can result from variability in the deployment of a p...
